Abstract: Gammarus was distributed in brooks and rivers in the eastern part of Hessen, but is absent from recent sampling. The reasons for the disappearence include: critical pollution of brooks and rivers, bringing O₂-content below 4 mg/l; a crtical drop in pH-values caused by acid rain; and extensive removal of groundwater for human use, leading to interruptions of the waterflow in brooks. Gammarus) is useful as an indicator to detect damage to running waters.
