Abstract: Researchers have studied the stimulus-response characteristics of insects for many years. They try to obtain insight into the mechanisms of visual processing and the interaction of sensory input and motor output. The fly is one of the best-studied insects for this purpose. Of particular interest is the selection of appropriate behaviours in response to visual input. This thesis focuses on the selection of two closely related behaviours in the fly: optomotor response and object fixation.
