The distribution of Gammarus pulex L. and Gammarus fossarum Koch in the Kaufunger Wald, a complex of hills east of Kassel (Hesse), indicates widespread damages in the limnological system of 30 streams. These damages are caused by water pollution, anthropogenic acidity, and an extensive use of groundwater. As an effect of these impacts the system of running waters broke into pieces, and barriers of different character now separate the streams from each other. This will make a future recovery of Kaufunger Wald streams more difficult than of streams in the Vogelsberg-region, where limnological damages were described earlier.
