Abstract:
Continuous arterial spin labeling (CASL) is known to be the most sensitive ASL
technique. To avoid magnetization transfer effects and to overcome hardware
limitations, several sequences have been proposed that adiabatically label the
inflowing blood. Four of these methods are examined with respect to their sensitivity
both theoretically by Bloch equation simulations and experimentally. All sequences
were optimized carefully by adjusting their measurement parameters based
exclusively on the results of simulations. Perfusion measurements on the human
brain obtained at 3 T result in excellent images from all techniques while differences
in sensitivity are similar to those expected from the simulations.
