To examine the spatial sensitivity of Mn-enhanced MRI (MEMRI) for neuronal activity mapping, we detected sound-evoked activity patterns in the auditory midbrain of mice. After mice were exposed to different sound stimuli, and the signal enhancement patterns were compared with tonotopic (iso-frequency) maps derived from electrophysiological recordings. Consistent with the published tonotopic maps of the mouse inferior colliculus (IC), MEMRI revealed
that low-to-high frequency components in sound stimuli are encoded in dorsal-to-ventral neuronal populations of the IC. Significantly, MEMRI also provides more elaborate neuronal activity representations corresponding to defined frequency and amplitude components to the acoustic stimulus.
