Abstract: It is now known that the r-modes of neutron stars are subject to a gravitational radiation driven instability in astrophysically realistic conditions. This instability will cause some rapidly rotating newborn neutron stars to spin down in the first year after their birth, emitting gravitational wave signals which may be detectable by the "enhanced" LIGO and VIRGO interferometers out to the Virgo cluster of galaxies-a distance at which several events per year may occur. The r-mode instability may also cause older accreting neutron · stars in low mass x-ray binaries to emit gravitational waves detectable within our own galaxy.
