Abstract: There are eight photoreceptors in each ommatidium of the compound eye of the fly, Musca Six of them (numbered 1 to 6) are similar with respect to the size of their rhabdomeres. They are different from the two others, the receptors no. 7 and 8, which are thinner and shorter. The difference between the two types of receptors is not limited to their size. Each type is the input to one of two different subsystems of the visual system of the fly (KIRSCHFELD and FRANCESCHINI, 1968; review KIRSCHFELD, 1973).
