Abstract: A new type of bacteria was discovered by Brock et al. (1972) during their investigation of microorganisms living at high temperatures. They assigned the new bacteria to a hitherto unknown genus which they called Sulfolobus. The species Sulfolobus acidocaldarius is well characterized by its name. It is a facultatively sulfur-oxidizing microorganism, with cells which were found to be lobed in certain growth stages, and which require a hot and acid environment. Depending on the strain the bacteria grow best at a pH between 0.9 and 3.5 and at temperatures between 70° and 90°C
