Using a covariant formulation it is shown that the Teukolsky equation and the
Teukolsky-Starobinsky identities for spin-1 and linearized gravity on a vacuum
type D background are self-adjoint. This fact is used to construct symmetry
operators for each of the four cases. We find both irreducible second order
symmetry operators for spin-1, a known fourth order, and a new sixth order
symmetry operator for linearized gravity. The results are connected to Hertz
and Debye potentials and to the separability of the Teukolsky equation.
