 Abstract: The diffusive mixing and delivery times of regulatory molecules in micrometer and submicrometer reaction volumes can be shorter than the characteristic times of conformational transformations in single enzyme molecules. Under these conditions, mutual synchronization of individual molecular turnover cycles takes place when strong allosteric activation by reaction products is present. Using a simple stochastic automaton model to describe the cycles of single molecules, we analyze properties of this synchronization transition and discuss the importance of such microscopic self-organization phenomena for functioning of biological cells.
