Abstract:
Fatty acid monolayers were deposited onto (111) surfaces of noble metal single crystals (copper, silver and gold). Substrate-induced monolayer alignment as well as inelastic scattering processes between impinging helium atoms and the vertically oriented hydrocarbon chains within a close-packed monolayer were investigated. The phonon energy of the collective vibrations of the hydrocarbon chains is at least two orders of magnitude smaller than that of metal crystal surfaces at room temperature.
