The incorporation of the following nucleic acid precursors into nucleic acids of the microbial
community from lake Großer Plöner See was measured, (methyl-3 H)thymidine, (5,6-3 H)uridine,
(methyl-3H)thymine, (2-3H)adenine, (5-3H)orotic acid, L-(U-14C)aspartic acid, (U-14C)glycine,
D-(l-14C)ribose and 32P phosphate. RNA and DNA were enriched and purified by adsorption
onto hydroxyapatite and subsequent elution with phosphate buffers of increasing molarity. All
of the precursors tested were incorporated into RNA and DNA. There was a significant labeling
of other cell substances, too. The rates of RNA ¿nd DNA synthesis calculated from radioactive
uptake showed large variations between different precursors.
