 Abstract: This thesis deals with the investigation of the biological effectiveness of antiprotons on V79-WNRE cells (Chinese hamster lung fibroblasts). It describes the development and operation of an automated, remotely controllable energy changing device to produce a clinically relevant dose profile. Moreover, for the first time, the use of a " ripple" filter for further optimization of the profile in an antiproton beam is discussed and analyzed. A broadening of the measured dose profile of 12 % compared to the ripplefilter- free beam, is in good agreement with the theoretical predicted 15 %. Due to the constraints with resprect to the experimental set-up imposed by the Antiproton Decelerator (AD at CERN) and the resulting long irradiation times, the biological data set is rather sparse, which complicates the statistical analysis. Because of this, a detailed discussion on the calculation of the standard deviation of cell survival rates is performed. Fnrthermore, a new concept is introduced, which unifies the analysis and includes statistical fluctuat ions.
