 Abstract: Abstract Quantitative information about the number and biomass of water-insect adults in a given area of running water was obtained by setting a greenhouse over a small stream and collecting the daily amount of emerging specimens. Over a period of one year (April 1969 to March 1970) a total of 52,000 insects (with more than 6,000 phoretic mites) of about 150 species was collected, i. e. 4,684 individuals/m2 (3.74 g dry organic matter/m2). For the more abundant species detailed information on monthly numbers, sex-ratio and dry-weight is given on tab. 1-7. This study forms the first contribution in a series of papers under preparation, dealing with the productivity of small lotic watersheds.
