Summary Building-behaviour of the larva of Macronenan ulmeri BANKS 1913 is analysed. The highly spezialized cases and catching-nets with their tiny and extraordinary regular meshes of this species may be considered as an adaptation to the creeks poor in foodstuff in which the animal, native in the Amazon-region, lives. The net is not a prefabricated fibrous secretion delivered in toto, but is constructed of spinning-threads by instinctively controlled movements. Structure and construction are equal to those of the other members of the family on principle, but in details there are considerable differences. Especially notable is, without regard to the striking difference of the mesh-size (relation about 1000 : 1), that the net of Macronema is woven of single threads, whereas the nets of the other genera are made of double-threads. Anatomical properties of the spinning glands and the properties of web from other areas than of the net, as well as certain peculiarities of the net itself support the assumption, that the animals always produce double-threads. As there exists equality of the number of threads the net is made of and of the number of spinning-movements made in the course of the construction of the net, one must suppose that only one half of these movements are real spinning-movements, whereas in the other half of the (vacant spining-) movements each double-thread is cleft in its 2 single fibres. Such precise work in those tiny dimensions should be based on morphological structures which allow the animal to perform it. Searching for these a pair of fine grooves in V-shaped arrangement, the expediency of which appears very evident, was found on the ventral side of the tip of the spinning-process (2nd Maxillae). Such grooves are absent in Hydropsychidae-larvae making nets with large meshes. Hypothetical considerations on the working method of the grooves are given. After the weaving the initially only little vaulted net is extended into the form of a hemisphere by seizing it with the legs and straining it vigorously several 100 times over the head. The appearance of vacant spinning-movements in the course of net-construction in M. supports the hypothesis, given in a former paper, that the nets of the Hydropsychidae (which are composed of pieces and not of a continual thread) may be homologized to those groups of 8- or zig-zag-shaped thread-slings which are spun by lepidopterous and trichopterous larvae when they make felty (i. e. meshless) webs. The arrangement of the threads in the Hydropsychidae-nets as well as that in the 8- or zig-zag-shaped thread groups can finally be reduced to lateral oscillating with the anterior body (that means to an elementar form of movement!). Taking-up of foodstuff, consisting of very fine detritus, is done by certain movements of forelegs and labrum, which are both well equipped with hair brushes.
