Abstract: To clarify what can be expected from models the role of modelling in the scientific process in relation to experiments and field studies is addressed. Hypotheses to explain vertical migration are reviewed with respect to the selection mechanism assumed; it is asked whether group selection instead of individual selection arguments are used explicitly or implicitly. Models which are formulated from precisely than verbal arguments are listed; one conceptual, evolutionary model and one ecological simulation model are discussed in detail. Perspectives and directions for improvements and further development of models are given.
