Abstract: A characteristic property of complex systems, that consist of active autonomous elements, is to self-organize their collective activity. The task of an engineer is to use such self-organization processes, rather than to act against them. In this introductory chapter, we provide a short review of the history of research on self-organization in chemical systems, discuss its current state of the art and consider the perspectives.
