Abstract:
This 229-page book provides an atlas of woody plant stems, and this atlas describes the anatomical basics of dendrochronoly and wood technology. This volume is structured into an introduction and 13 chapters. Each chapter is internally structured into more specific sections and subsections within the chapter scope. The first chapter discusses the evolution of plant stems in the Earth's history, and chapter 2 concentrates on the structure of the plant body. Topics covered in chapters 3-8 include: advantages and risks of secondary growth; modification of the stem structure; modification of the xylem within a plant; modification of the xylem and phloem by ecological factors; organ modification; and anatomical plasticity. Chapters 9-13 discuss modifications caused by weather and climate, modifications caused by extreme events, from anatomical features to plant structures, decay of dead wood, and microscopical preparation, respectively. All of the references are included together after the final chapter. The reference list is followed by a list of species, and the book is indexed by subject. The book includes 710 illustrations, many of which are in color. This book will appeal to researchers and students of plant science, forestry, and ecology.
