Dissolution is the process by which a solid, liquid or gas enters its fluid phase. This can be explained simply as a breakdown of the crystal structure or the crystal lattice into individual ions, atoms or molecules.
Mechanism of dissolution kinetics of crystals has been intensively studied in the pharmaceutical domein, because the rate of dissolution affects the bioavailability of drug crystals .
The importance of dissolution kinetics not only is restricted to the pharmaceutical industry, they also have important implications in industrial crystallization processes. For example, the dissolution of fine crystals is operative for the production of large crystals with narrower size distribution.
The dissolution behaviour is one field of the science that needs still a lot of improvement and research. Many efforts have been made to define the dissolution conduct, and classically, drug dissolution is considered to be governed by the Noyes-Whitney equation, which expresses the dissolution as a simple diffusion process.
It has to be taken in consideration that in industrial crystallization, not only mass transfer but also surface reaction (in the case of this work, disintegration) must be taken into account in order to understand the dissolution process because this crystallization can be carried out with powerful agitation.
