Abstract:
Ultra-high field MR often suffers from the inhomogeneous distribution of the exciting rffield,as well as from the increasing complexity of rf-coils used to overcome this problem. The Traveling Wave approach represents a new way of applying the necessary rf-field needed for MR excitation by using the magnet bore as a waveguide. A simple patch
antenna that can be placed at the end of the bore is used to generate the rf-field, which propagates through the magnet. Here, the principles of the traveling wave approach are discussed. After a short introduction of the physical background, properties and current applications of the
technique are shown. Novel ways of improving the field homogeneity and of guiding the field to where it is needed are presented.
