Abstract: We examined the perceptual disappearance (or ‘filling in’) of a peripheral target surrounded by dynamic texture. Targets defined by different visual attributes were used to explore the importance of target properties in determining the time-course of fading. Introducing luminance-, motion- or direction-contrast between the target and background increased the time-to-fade. For motion contrast, this was related to target visibility. Targets defined by a difference of texture from the background took longer to fade than those defined by a difference of motion. This might correspond to activity in different visual areas, or could be due to different visibilities in each case.
