Abstract: Changes in the structure of the brain which occur after birth are interesting because they might be, and in part have proven to be, subject to environmental influences. This is true, for instance, for the development of dendritic spines and synapses in the cerebral cortex of mice and rats (f. ex. Cragg 1967, Fifková. 1970, Valverde 1971, Winkelmann et al. 1977). However, in precocial animals such as the guinea-pig the majority of spines and synapses in the cerebral cortex develop before birth (Schüz 1981). This makes us hesitant to connect these changes to processes of learning.
