Abstract: In this report we describe the details of the backward compatible high dynamic range (HDR) video compression algorithm. The algorithm is designed to facilitate a smooth transition from standard low dynamic range (LDR) video to high fidelity high dynamic range content. The HDR and the corresponding LDR video frames are decorrelated and then compressed into a single MPEG stream, which can be played on both existing DVD players and HDR-enabled devices.
