Abstract: Combining three: The first examples of ternary rare-earth transition-metal polyhydride clusters (see figure) are reported. Cluster formation proceeds through C[BOND]H bond activation of the Cp ligands that stabilize the transition-metal-containing starting material. Analysis of the electronic structure of the polyhydride cluster compounds revealed covalent Re[BOND]Lu bonding and ionic transition metal hydride–Lu interactions.
