 Abstract: Surprisingly [11.11]cyclophane 1 (n = 3) shows transannular nuclear Overhauser effects (NOES) in dichloromethane and acetonitrile between the protons of the bipyridinium and those of the phenothiazine unit, indicating an attractive donor-acceptor interaction. In the [20.20]cyclophane 1 (n = 6) complexation with barium ions facilitates the approach of the donor and acceptor units.
