Abstract:
In the present chapter we summarize experimental NMR studies performed on various discotic compounds. The approach used, as in many other studies of liquid crystalline systems, has been deuterium NMR of specifically deuteriated mesogens, as well as of deuteriated probe molecules dissolved in the various mesophases. We first review some chemical aspects related to discotic compounds, followed by the classification of the discotic mesophases as known to date. The basic equations used in the interpretation of the spectra will then be given with particular emphasis on the effect of the mesophase symmetry. Finally the experimental results are discussed under the following subheadings: (a) uniaxial phases, (b) biaxial phases, (c) NMR of probe molecules, and (d) diffusion measurements. The presentation follows very closely and sometimes overlaps the discussion in the review article recently published in the Israel Journal of Chemistry (1).
