There are still very few systems from which we can obtain detailed information about the geometry of the interactions between proteins and nucleic acids. One such is Tobacco Mosaic Virus (TMV). TMV consists of 2140 protein subunits, each of mol. wt 17,420 (158 residues), arranged on a helix of pitch 2.3 nm with 16 1/3 subunits per turn.
