 Abstract: Hydrogen embrittlement is a serious problem in iron-containing alloys. The hydrogen ingress through passive and oxide layers covering these alloys is not yet fully understood. Therefore, a new method was developed to follow hydrogen ingress into iron oxide layers. It was shown experimentally that the Kelvin probe can be used as a measuring method to follow the reduction of iron oxides due to hydrogen ingress. The measured results were interpreted on the basis of theoretical considerations which relate the measured decay in Volta-potential-difference with the concentration of iron ions inside the oxides.
