Abstract: Most of the REAl2 compounds (RE rare earth) are reported to order ferromagnetically /1/ Exceptions are the intermediate valence system YbAl2 /2/, the Kondo system CeAl2 /3/ and EuAl2 /1/, which is the only member of this family containing divalent RE ions. The REAI2 compounds crystallize in the MgCu2 structure, where the RE ions build up a diamond lattice. The point symmetry of these sites is cubic. In the case of TmAl2, the (2J+1) = 13 fold degeneracy of the Tm3+ is partially lifted by the crystal field, leaving a s triplet as ground state /4/.
