Abstract: Vacuum gas oils are distilled in the approximate temperature range 400 - 600 °C and thus contain compounds of high molecular weight. Hydrodesulfurization of such fractions is less efficient than for lower-boiling fractions. Our research focusses on finding information on the molecular structure of such aromatic sulfur compounds that are difficult to desulfurize. For compounds in the mass range 300-900, gas chromatography is not available so we use liquid chromatographic methods coupled with Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrometry. Various LC separation mechanisms are used so that the aromatics are fractionated according to well-defined criteria, making it possible to obtain structural information through the combination of LC and MS. An Iranian light vacuum gas oil (2.0 % before and 0.12 % S after HDS) will be discussed and the process used to obtain structural information presented.
