Abstract: Low energy ion scattering in the surface channeling, surface blocking and in the NICISS mode is used to study the surface structure of the Ag(110) surface in the temperature range from 300 to 890 K. The different defect percentage measured at room temperature along the (1 (1) over bar0) and (001) azimuth suggests that defects on the Ag(110) surface are mainly segments of missing rows oriented along the (1 (1) over bar0) direction. Above 600 K this type of defects is observed to proliferate in good agreement with earlier results for surface roughening. On the contrary, surface vacancies are observed at first above 700 K. Above 600 K anharmonic contributions to the surface thermal vibrations are detected in excellent agreement with theory.
