Zusammenfassung: Unlike any other species, humans possess the unique abilities to make and enjoy music, and to produce and comprehend language. Coincidence? Rather not. Theorists believe that evolution has shaped the neural architecture in a way that endowed man with the necessary cognitive machinery to master these two domains with unrivalled ease. The past decade of comparative research in both domains promised to shed light onto common cognitive roots of music and language. The present talk will discuss evidence for and against cognitive overlap, methodological pitfalls and new directions in how to compare cognitive domains, as a potential window into the human mind.
