 Abstract: MRI has radically changed our view on the human body, since it allows observations of the anatomy and function of organs with high detail. In general though, MR-based biomarkers are surrogates for tissue structure and function below the millimeter scale. By coupling advanced MRI at ultra-high magnetic fields (UHF) to the latest discoveries in medical research, we seek to get closer to this reality. Currently we are investigating the capability of high-resolution MR methods that exploit recent developments in UHF technology to unravel the complexity of pathophysiologic processes. In close collaboration with our clinical partners at the Medical Faculty of the University of Tübingen, we explore the clinical use of MRI, like quantitative mapping of T1, T2*, and Magnetic Susceptibility (QSM), along with neurochemical investigations based on chemical shift imaging and single voxel MRS. In the past few years, over 30 patients and as many healthy volunteers have participated in clinical studies, with no drop-out so far.
