 MPIPKS: Stochastic processes
Abstract: In the 1980's, people discovered that certain nonlinear systems showed improved coherence with the addition of random noise. We present the theory of stochastic resonance at a quantitative level suitable for graduate students in the physical sciences. We also discuss the current frontiers where open questions remain, with particular emphasis on stochastic resonance in fundamental quantum systems, as well as in excitable biological systems.
