Zusammenfassung: Three clusters of protocadherin genes (alpha, beta, gamma PCDHs) are present in the human and mouse genome. In both, gamma PCDHs comprise 22 family members in three groups (A, B, C). We detected transcripts of individual gamma PCDHs in many neurons of the developing and adult mouse brain by in situ hybridization and Northern blots. Highest expression is generally found in forebrain, hippocampus and cerebellum during the second postnatal week. Both regional and cellular differences are observed for the examined transcripts (gamma A1, A12, B4, C3, C5). Temporally, C5 shows a later onset, distinct from the other gamma PCDHs. Our findings suggest that subtypes of neurons express a defined pattern of individual gamma PCDH genes.
