Abstract:
Die öffentliche Diskussion über das Verhältnis von Demokratie und Kapitalismus vergisst häufig, dass es einen gesellschaftlichen Raum jenseits von Wirtschaft und politischem System gibt, obwohl eng mit diesen verbunden: den Raum der Zivilgesellschaft, in dem soziale Bewegungen und viele andere Institutionen existieren. Diese Institutionen sind entscheidend für die Reform des öffentlichen Lebens, wenn sie auch die verfasste Demokratie nicht ersetzen können. Mittlerweile fordern Rechtsextremismen demokratische und zivilgesellschaftliche Institutionen gemeinsam heraus, mit ihrer Fähigkeit zur Mobilisierung von Bevölkerungen, die immer deutlicher keine Identität außerhalb der nationalen besitzen.
Abstract:
Much public debate over relations between democracy and capitalism forgets the social space that exists outside economy and polity though deeply involved in them, the civil society space within which social movements and many other institutions exist. These institutions are vital to the reform of public life, though they cannot replace those of formal democracy. Meanwhile, right-wing extremism is challenging democratic and civil society institutions alike through its power to mobilize populations which increasingly have no political identity outside the nation.
