 Abstract: In the present short review, loosely packed two-dimensional arrays of hydrogel colloids with quasi-hexagonal order, which are fabricated by self-assembly on solid substrates, are discussed. For this purpose the most prominent hydrogel microgel, composed of poly(N-isopropylacrylamide), is considered. Its extraordinary properties dictate not only the formation of loosely packed 2D colloidal crystals but also pave the road to various applications ranging from optical devices to cell culture substrates.
