A theoretically ambitious causal reconstruction of the financial crisis that erupted in 2008, based on the far-ranging discussion among experts in academia and the media, makes it possible to identify different explanatory approaches, some of which are associated with the micro–macro model linking agency and structure, and some with a model of actors in systems. Three actor-theoretical approaches, in the broadest sense, apply to the micro level of social action, the meso level of the organization, and the macro level of the financial industry. On each level, causal factors specific to that level play a crucial role. Systems theoretical approaches explaining the financial crisis focus not on the actions of individual and corporate actors, but rather on causal relations among abstract system variables which are the basis of the financial system’s stability. The final section of the paper discusses methodological questions brought up by this exercise in causal reconstruction as well as the possibility of integrating the different approaches – without offering an integrated explanatory model.

Bei einer theoretisch orientierten kausalen Rekonstruktion des Entstehens der Finanzkrise von 2008 auf der Grundlage der Diskussion in Wissenschaft und Medien lassen sich verschiedene Erklärungsansätze identifizieren, die teils dem Schema Handeln und Struktur und teils dem Schema Akteur und System zuzuordnen sind. Drei im weitesten Sinn akteurtheoretische Ansätze beziehen sich auf die Mikroebene sozialen Handelns, die Mesoebene von Organisationen und die Makroebene der Finanzindustrie. Auf jeder Ebene spielen besondere, für sie spezifische Krisenursachen die zentrale Rolle. Bei den zur Erklärung der Finanzkrise benutzten systemtheoretischen Ansätzen geht es nicht um das Handeln individueller und korporativer Akteure, sondern um kausale Zusammenhänge zwischen abstrakten Systemvariablen, auf denen die Stabilität des Finanzsystems beruht. Abschließend werden die methodologischen Fragen diskutiert, die diese Übung in kausaler Rekonstruktion aufwirft; die Möglichkeit der Integration der verschiedenen Erklärungsansätze wird erörtert, ohne ein integriertes Erklärungsmodell vorzuschlagen.
