 Abstract: The coupling of cystamine to carboxyl groups of tobacco mosaic virus mediated by a water-soluble carbodiimide has been studied. The purpose of this study was to provide further heavy atom derivatives for X-ray diffraction analysis of the virus. Although this was not achieved due to the insolubilisation of the virus during the reaction, it was found that the reaction is limited to essentially only 3 of the carboxyl groups of the virus protein subunits and is consistent with these sites being located towards the outside of the virus particle.
