Abstract:
Within the past decade gravity wave parameterization has come into widespread use in atmospheric general circulation models (GCMs). Most of the schemes used hitherto are based on a simplified linear representation of the gravity waves, Advances in theoretical understanding of gravity wave processes in the middle atmosphere have been achieved in recent years largely as a result of the observational work of the past decade. These advances have in turn led to new parameterization proposals. This paper reviews briefly the state of gravity wave parameterization as used in GCMs and presents selected results from an application of a new scheme - the Doppler Spread Parameterization proposed by Hines (1996a,b).
