Abstract: To address the question of whether there has been an increase in punitive attitudes within society, this contribution provides a conceptual overview and a summary of empirical findings so far. After a methodological critique of existing surveys, two alternative empirical approaches to assess punitive attitudes are presented as examples. The article concludes by discussing possible political implications as well as providing an outline of research perspectives.
