A review is given of active control of plasma instabilities in a number of different experimental configurations. Starting with the control of global oscillations in simple plasma diodes, the more demanding problem of wave-type plasma instabilities is addressed. Case studies were performed in ionization waves, drift waves, neoclassical tearing modes and other plasma instabilities. We also discuss the different control strategies, tailored to the specific physical mechanism of the particular plasma instability. Facts and future prospects of controlling weakly and fully developed plasma turbulence by active perturbations are summarized.
