Abstract: This article introduces the basics and some advanced topics of functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) used for human neuroimaging. It covers the relationship between the physics background, data acquisition methods, and the interaction with data analysis, particularly statistical parametric mapping (SPM). The main areas covered are basic MR physics, fMRI, basis of blood oxygenation level dependent fMRI signals, image artifacts and noise in fMRI data, and fMRI data analysis which includes spatial preprocessing and statistical modeling of fMRI data.
