Abstract: The equilibrium shape of a bent PE was investigated and three striking results obtained. The first is the fact that the Odijk formula for the persistence length applies almost perfectly to the case of a fluctuating PE when the bent equilibrium segment has a constant curvature. The second result is a suggestion for an improved calculation of the persistence length based on the energy of the bent PE. Finally, the shape of the distorted PE segment is characterized in terms of "shoulder" regions, immediately adjacent to the end points of the chain.
