Self-assembled organic films provide model systems for the study of the physical and chemical properties of organic surfaces. In this overview, I will summarize the work on one of the most extensively studied model systems, n-alkane thiols on gold, and present some of our recent results on molecular orientation and order in the films, the kinetics of adsorption and ordering, and the topographical changes of the gold substrate caused by thiol adsorption. Whereas previous studies on self-assembled monolayers have mainly relied on traditional surface analytical methods and Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIRAS), we used Second Harmonic Generation (SHG), Near Edge X-ray Adsorption Fine Structure Measurements (NEXAFS) and Scanning Tunneling Microscopy (STM) in our investigations.
