Abstract:
Carbon nanostructures were found to be powerful metal-free catalysts. This chapter reviews some families of such reactions and elaborates on the diverse defects and chemical functionalities onto the graphene layers that are thought to catalyze such reactions, such as oxygenated functional groups, carbon vacancies and holes, edge effects, and the presence of dopant elements. In addition to discrete active sites, the catalytic activity arisen from the collective properties of conjugated nanocarbons and the electron transfer to substrates and adsorbed catalysts are also commented. This chapter is concluded with some of our perspectives on future developments in the field.
