Abstract: The aim of the lecture is to go through the development of neuroscientific concepts and methodologies, ranging from the Dualism of Descartes, to mind-conceptions of Sherrington, Hebb & Konorski, electrophysiological recordings, introduction of concurrent multimodal and multiscale (micro-meso-macro) recordings, electrical stimulation, and neural-event-related fMRI, that attempt to define brain-state at the time of occurrence of various intrinsic neural events. About half of the duration of such a lecture introduces and discusses the methods and strategies used to understand the anatomical & functional organization of sensory systems, the cellular properties of cortical Areas, the various temporal neural scales currently used, and the notion of volume conduction permitting recordings from small neural populations. It subsequently briefly introduces the questions related to the neurovascular coupling, underlying the interpretation of fMRI signals, and concludes with examples of multimodal current research concurrently conducted at different spatiotemporal scales.
