Abstract: This chapter addresses the challenges and chances of big-data driven materials science, and it describes concepts and implementation of the forth paradigm of materials research. The importance of an all-embracing sharing (open data), of an efficient data infrastructure, and of the consideration of all computer codes used in the community is emphasized: Data must be FINDABLE, ACCESSABLE INTEROPERABLE and RE-PURPOSABLE. Recent developments of methods from artificial intelligence are reviewed and demonstrated, and the chapter is concluded by a forward looking perspective addressing important not yet solved challenges.
