We report that large-scale reorganization of
the mouse auditory midbrain tonotopic map is induced by a specific sound rearing e
nvironment consisting of
paired low and high frequency t
ones. Using a Manganese enhanced MRI (MEMRI) t
echnique with 100 micron resolution, we found that
two-tone rearing
prevented the appearance of separated frequency-specific respons
es; instead, a significant volume of the auditory midbrain beca
me responsive to both
rearing frequencies. Our study characteri
zed the developmental plasticity in the a
uditory midbrain, providing a critical workin
g model to study the experience dependent plasticity using MEMRI.
