Abstract: The diet of Curimata (Potamorhina) pristigaster consists primarily of algas and detritus, although
plant remains and microcrustaceans can also be included. There were changes in the composition of the
diet in function of water level fluctuations. Microcrustaceans were more frequent and abundant during
low water level.
The fillet of Curimata pristigaster present low fat values, and high protein values. Fat values are
higher if the entire fish is taken into consideration because the abdominal cavity is an important storage
space for fat. Humidity values are inversely correlated with protein. Fat values in the whole fish appear
to be more correlated with the maturation of the ovaries.
The mature ovaries have 10 times as much fat and 2 times as much protein and minerals as the
fillet.
The amplitude of absolute fecundity in Curimata pristigaster varies between 51.330 and 667.800
eggs.
The gonadsomatic index proved to be dependent on the maturation process of the ovaries. This
last, along with the twice monthly distribution of the degree of ovary development, provided the subsidy
for determining the spawning period which occurs between March and July.
